All Milwaukee Public Schools to follow same calendar for 2024-25 school year

Milwaukee Public School board members approved a measure Thursday night to change the district’s school calendar system, moving from a two-calendar system to a single, districtwide calendar.The change will take effect with the 2024-25 school year.A total of 42 schools in the district followed an “early start” calendar for the 2023-24 school year. Students at those schools went back to class on Aug. 14. Schools following the “traditional” calendar started school three weeks later, on Sept. 5.In a news release Thursday night, MPS said survey results showed parents “overwhelmingly” supported moving to a single calendar. It also said the move will cut costs on bus transportation, streamline district operations and lessen the impact of extreme heat on school days. “The single calendar also will be more convenient for families with children in different schools that previously were on different calendars,” the release said.The first day of school for the 2024-25 school year is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024.
