Career Center administrator to oversee technical education for Waterloo Schools
WATERLOO — Amy Miehe has been named director of career and technical education for Waterloo Community Schools.
The promotion for the administrator of the Waterloo Career Center is effective July 1, pending approval by the Board of Education.
“Amy has demonstrated successful leadership at the WCC, and we eagerly anticipate her transition to this new role where she will oversee pre-K-12 career development for the district,” Superintendent Jared Smith said in a news release.
Miehe, who began working for the district in 2006, has served in her current position since 2020. She was a social studies teacher at East High School until becoming the lead teacher at the Career Center in 2018.
The center provides students from Waterloo and surrounding communities with authentic learning experiences by equipping them with professional skills and real-world expectations. It offers a unique opportunity for students to attain industry-standard certifications, apprenticeships, concurrent credit, and work-based learning experiences.

“The career center provides a platform for students to explore their talents and passions through diverse classes, fostering curiosity and personal growth,” said Miehe. “I am honored and thrilled to further develop our educational pipeline, ensuring all students grades K-12 have exposure to career and technical learning opportunities.”
Since it opened in 2017, the center has seen tremendous growth in programs and student success. Currently, 742 students from the district and 10 partnering schools are enrolled in 1,320 classes. Students have an 87% attendance rate. The hands-on approach to career and technical education at the center engages students at high levels, as evidenced by higher grade point averages.
Miehe holds a bachelor of arts degree in social science education and a master of arts in educational leadership from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She resides in Waterloo with her husband, Matt, and their three children who are currently enrolled at Hoover Middle and Orange Elementary schools.
