Boys basketball roundup: ACGC enjoys a dramatic win over MACCRAY

Feb. 12—GROVE CITY — Up one with 31 seconds to go, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City had to hold on for the win on Monday night.

Kyler Pickle gave the Falcons a 71-70 lead over MACCRAY after a steal and transition layup. ACGC kept that lead when Marcus Forsythe got a steal in the lane with 7.6 seconds left. Tucker Johnson made it a three-point game after hitting a pair of free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining.

A shot at the buzzer by MACCRAY bounced off the front of the rim to secure a 73-70 non-conference boys basketball win for the Falcons.

An old-school approach to offense helped ACGC’s Forsythe and Jonas Morrison lead the offense

The pair used a bevy of low-post moves to beat the Wolverines’ defense. Forsythe, a 6-foot-5 junior, had a team-high 19 points along with seven rebounds and three blocks. Morrison, a 6-3 senior, had 17 points and eight rebounds.

Pickle (13) and Johnson (10) also finished in double figures. Pickle also led ACGC with 11 assists and six steals. The Falcons had a 38-37 lead at halftime.

Matt Wadsworth hit five 3-pointers for MACCRAY, finishing with 15 points. He also had seven assists. Xavier Noble finished as the Wolverines’ leader with 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Willie Miller and Sawyer Janssen both had 13 points and Isaac Post finished with 10 points.

ACGC has another non-conference tilt at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Montevideo. MACCRAY is back in Camden Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in Clara City.

DeAndre Holloway became Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s all-time leading scorer with 1,431 career points in a victory over Minnewaska at Glenwood.

The 6-foot-7 senior forward scored 41 points to become the school’s all-time leading scorer for boys. The previous record was held by Chuck Lierman, who reached 1,425 career points for Kerkhoven in 1956.

Jared Cortez added 14 points and five steals and Teagen Diederich had 13 points, 23 rebounds and three assists for the Fighting Saints.

Marc Gruber had 17 points and Jack Majerus added 16 points for the Lakers.

KMS goes to Clara City to play MACCRAY for a Camden Conference game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Minnewaska travels to Barrett to face West Central Area at 7:15 p.m. Friday in a West Central Conference game.

Benson improved to 9-13 against Community Christian School behind a 30-point performance by Harold Habben at Benson.

The Braves had three more scorers in double figures. Joseph Pagel had 19 points, Landon Skarsten notched 14 and Lanadreon Goodwin tacked on 11.

For CCS, Brady Reinertson led the way with 14 points. David Mulder had nine.Benson goes to Melrose for a West Central Conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday. CCS is off until Tuesday, Feb. 20 when the Eagles host Immanuel Lutheran for an 8 p.m. game.

Jack Gross scored 10 points and had seven rebounds in BOLD’s loss to the Sauk Centre Mainstreeters at Bird Island.

BOLD got eight points and six rebounds from Hudson Vosika.

The Warriors resume conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday against Morris/Chokio-Alberta back at Bird Island.
