The McDowell Senior Center is offering a five-night cruise aboard the Carnival Cruise Line’s Sunshine from Oct. 26-31. Participants will travel by motorcoach to Charleston, S.C., where they will board the Sunshine. The deadline to sign up and pay deposit of $250 is Friday, March 15. The Coggins Clinic Awards Ceremony and Fun Show will be held by the McDowell Saddle and Bridle Club at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at 4120 N.C. 226 South in Marion. Coggins are $40 per horse (with $2 per coggins donated to the MSBC). Coggins Clinic is at 9 a.m. and there will be giving out high point belt buckles from last year. The fun show will start at 1 p.m. and surprise raffle winner will be chosen. Annual vaccines and deworming will also be available. The McDowell Democratic Party will hold its annual convention on Saturday, March 16, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Marion Community Building. Jim Ervin, an inspirational orator and former N.C. Supreme Court justice, will be the keynote speaker. Food and beverages will be served and socializing will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the convention from 10 a.m. to noon. All McDowell Democrats are encouraged to attend and bring a friend.
The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League in Old Fort will offer a class in making a felted hummingbird with Anne Marie Brown as the instructor. The class will be taught Saturday, March 16, from 1-4 p.m. The cost is $50 for A3L members, $60 for nonmembers, and includes all supplies. This is a medium-level class. You must have taken one of the other felting classes. Limited to four students. Needle felting is an ancient art using wool and special needles to sculpt animals and birds. It is a very forgiving craft and easy to learn. Wools come in various colors and textures. You will leave the class with a completed animal, and knowledge to use to make your own creations in the future. Beginner classes are required to take more advanced classes. The next plant-based potluck will be Saturday, March 16, from 6-8 p.m.at First Baptist Church of Marion’s fellowship hall. Join participants for a meal and guest speaker, cardiologist Dr. Brian Asbill. Bring a plant-based dish (no meats/egg/dairy) and a hearty appetite. Not sure what to bring? Just bring fruit. Paper products provided. Please bring a copy of your recipe to share with others. Interested folks can take a photo with their phones. There will be unsweetened tea. Water will be available as well. Feel free to bring another beverage if desired. This event is open to the community and is free of charge.

The MATCH program will hold a free tax clinic on Monday, March 18, from 3-6 p.m. at the Marion East Recreational Complex at 635 Baldwin Ave. in East Marion.
The McDowell Board of Elections will hold an educational seminar about voter photo identification requirements at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, at the local Board of Elections office at 2458 N.C. 226 South in Marion. The seminar is free and open to the public. Attendees of this seminar will receive information about voting options, including absentee-by-mail, early voting and Election Day voting. Information about provisional voting, the availability of free North Carolina voter ID cards and residency requirements for voting also will be provided. The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Wednesday, March 20, from noon to 4:45 p.m. at the Grace Community Church Youth Building, 5182 U.S. 70 West, Marion.
The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League in Old Fort will offer a class called “Let’s Get Cracking and Reacting” with Diane Enger as the instructor. The class will be taught Thursday, March 21, from 1-4 p.m. The cost is $30 for A3L members, $40 for nonmembers, plus a $15 materials fee (includes glass, assorted accent glass, tools and firing). Minimum of three students, maximum of six students. In this class, students will create a tile or dish using a cracking technique and working with reactive glass. They will create a background using shards of French Vanilla glass and use a variety of turquoise glass to complete the design. This class is great for beginners as there is no glass cutting and more experienced fusers can learn a new technique and a look at the world of glass color reactions. The McDowell Master Gardeners are hosting a free workshop on invasive plant management in the home landscape, scheduled for Thursday, March 21, at 5 p.m. at the McDowell Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion. The workshop will be led by John Odell, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in forestry and land stewardship. This workshop is free and open to the public. The countywide Community Forum will be held on Thursday, March 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This event will be hosted by the Marion East Community Forum and it will take place at the Marion Community Building at 191 N. Main St. Voz Artistica, a project of West Marion Inc. and McDowell Arts Council Association, will guest host an art sampler workshop for adults with a focus on art as a tool for self-care and resiliency. This workshop is cost-free. Dinner and child care will be provided. Participants will make three pieces of art and receive art supplies to use at home. Date night or girls night out, this is what you want to do. Bacon will guide you step by step and you will take home a painting you can be proud of. Students will work in acrylics on canvas. Bring what you want to drink and be prepared to have lots of fun. It is offered on the fourth Friday night of each month. You must sign up no later than the Wednesdays before the class, to give the instructor time to prepare. Davidson’s Fort Historic Park at 140 Bud Hogan Road in Old Fort will hold the fifth annual Market Faire on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Experience how the settlers of the 18th century shopped for goods. The reenactors at Davidson’s Fort will have vendors in 18th century dress selling items referring to that period. Clothing, soaps, candles, books, hand-crafted pottery, pewter and other items. The fort is not state owned; all work and upkeep of this fort is by donations only. The admission is free but donations would be greatly appreciated.
