Public meetings roundup: Walla Walla City Council to discuss interim cell tower policy

The Walla Walla City Council will consider extending the city’s interim zoning ordinance related to wireless communication facilities for an additional six months after a public hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The interim policy approved in March 2023 added certain conditions that must be met before a tower can be constructed in a residential zone.

It made residential areas the last resort for new towers and gave the city time to look for ways to plan for future development of wireless facilities in Walla Walla.

The policy was put in place for one year.

With a cell tower lawsuit pending between AT&T and the city of Walla Walla over a tower permit that was denied, the city staff has requested the interim policy be extended six months to allow additional time to put together permanent amendments.

Residents can weigh in at the hearing Wednesday.
